The fourth Barbican International Jazz and Blues Festival gets under way this weekend.

With a Royal Wedding, a new Festival Village, Marquee and Market, Swing Sunday and a Grand Festival Jazz Parade, the event is set to turn the Barbican festive from April 29 through to May 2.

The four-day event features local, national and international jazz and blues artistes, with free and ticketed gigs in venues dotted throughout Plymouth's historic quayside quarter.

Royal Wedding action The Royal Wedding takes place during the Festival and Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and the Association of Barbican Businesses will be staging a street party along Southside Street on Friday afternoon. The road will be closed to vehicles from 10am to 6pm and guests are invited to bring their own picnic to sit out on chairs and tables and celebrate the union between 2pm and 5pm. The best red, white and blue costume could win £100 cash!

The Festival The event - supported by Plymouth City Council and backed by the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership - links a network of waterside venues to create a buzzy atmosphere of free and ticketed gigs. Look out for gigs in the B-Bar, the Barbican Theatre, Plymouth Gin Distillery, the National Marine Aquarium, the Blues Bar and Grill, The Treasury, the Admiral MacBride, The Minerva and more.

The fourth annual Barbican International Jazz & Blues Festival is approaching.

The event – supported by Plymouth City Council and backed by the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership – brings excellent music and a groovy atmosphere to the city’s historic quayside quarter. And everyone’s invited.

This year, the event takes place over the four days of the first May Bank Holiday weekend – including a Royal Wedding too.

There will be a network of waterside venues linking together to create a buzzy atmosphere of free and ticketed gigs. Look out for gigs in the B-Bar, the Barbican Theatre, Bacaro, the Watering Hole, Plymouth Gin Distillery, the National Marine Aquarium, the Blues Bar and Grill and more.

New for 2011
The Festival is developing each year, with new aspects, including:

The Jazz Village – a dedicated marquee on the quayside by the landing stage programmed with excellent acts and a Festival Market throughout the event.

A Stroller Ticket – enabling Festival-goers to pay one fee and gain entry to multiple shows.

The Festival brings together local and international acts from across the spectrum of jazz and blues. Headliners this year include piano man T J Johnson, keyboard crooner Joe Stilgoe, sax-funkers Porkchop and US guitar bluesman Michael Roach.

Local band highlights include Becca Langsford launching her new album, blues player Vince Lee (pictured left), slide guitar man Thomas Ford and his band the Dirty Harmonies, gospel soul-singer Mama Tokus and jazz diva Louise Parker.

Excellent young jazz and blues musicians are included in the programming, ensuring that the next generation of musicians are supported and showcased.

Watch out for swing bands, swing dancing in the street, colourful costumes and singalong tunes. We’ve teamed up with Plymouth swing dance teaching outfit Mad About Swing to bring workshops and dance action to the Festival.

Swing bands and performers are being programmed throughout the day to ensure that everyone’s a King of the Swingers by the time Swing Sunday’s over.

Bank Holiday Monday
The Festival begins on Friday April 29 and runs until Bank Holiday Monday May 2. So organisers will be pulling out the stops to put on a fantastic day of music, street entertainment and the glorious Grand Festival Jazz Parade – complete with jazz umbrella waving.

We put free music all over the historic quayside quarter of our beautiful city of Plymouth.

We showed off the music talent we have in this city as well as bringing international musicians to perform here.

We linked venues and eateries in a network across the Barbican, spreading the Festival further.

We created a great atmosphere for all the family and highlighted the heritage of the Barbican.

And we hope we entertained you too!

We've already hosted fab gigs by Dennis Rollins (pictured), Diz Watson and Tony Uter, plus loads of street entertainment and a Grand Festival Jazz Parade attended by brolly-waving revellers.

We've had a great weekend of live music, outdoor stalls, the brand new Mayflower Steps stage, a parade and loads and loads of atmosphere.

Claire Martin, Ian Shaw, Empirical and Dennis Rollins will be headlining the 2010 Barbican International Jazz and Blues Festival, we're delighted to say.

Best Jazz Vocalist at the BBC Jazz Awards in 2007 and 2004, Ian Shaw has already amassed a number of highly acclaimed albums and is a popular performer both in the

and the

. An incredibly colourful character, he has been cited, along with Mark Murphy and Kurt Elling, as one of the world's finest male jazz vocalists.

Collaborators over the years have been many and include Quincy Jones, Abudullah Ibrahim, Mornington Lockett, Cleo Laine, John Dankworth and Cedar Walton.

His ongoing and highly popular collaboration is a celebrated duet show with Claire Martin, the

's finest female jazz singer, which we are bringing to Plymouth, courtesy of a co-promotion with Peninsula Arts at the University of Plymouth.

Claire is also an award-winning singer and won Best Vocalist at the British Jazz Awards 2009.

She is described as "the most gifted jazz singer this country has produced in 20 years" and she has shared stages with James Brown, Mark Murphy, Kurt Elling and Tony Bennett.

Empirical have won UK and European jazz awards for their incredible work which has put them at the forefront of new jazz.

They're utterly contemporary, yet discernibly influenced both by the classic jazz of the 1950s and '60s (Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Ornette Coleman). They opened the London Jazz Festival last year, performed at the famous Newport Jazz Festival in the States and feature regularly in national music media.

We've got great opportunities to advertise your brand, service or business through the Festival.

In particular, our full-colour brochure offers great rates, distribution and impact.

We print up 20,000 full colour brochures which are distributed throughout the South West, the UK and overseas in the run-up to the Festival. The brochure is also distributed freely throughout the Festival itself.

For advertising in the full-colour A5 landscape Official Festival Brochure, the following rates apply:

Full page (3 columns): £POA
One column: £POA
Half column: £POA
Brochure back page: £POA

Advert sizes:
Full page advert: 194mm wide x 128mm high
One column advert: 62mm wide x 128mm high
Half column advert: 62mm wide x 64mm high

Adverts need to be provided in the following formats:

Either JPEG – must be 300dpi and sized to the dimensions of chosen advert.

Or a high-resolution PDF (300dpi) and sized to the dimensions of chosen advert.

Fonts must be embedded into the PDF.

The Barbican International Jazz and Blues Festival is spread across a network of venues in the historic quayside Barbican area of Plymouth.

We'll be unveiling our Official Festival Venues 2010 very soon and they will be hosting Barbican International Jazz and Blues Festival events.

Of course, there will be events in other Barbican venues during the Festival too – so do check these out as well.
